5 years old and still kickin'

star1.jpeg

When Starcraft first came out in 1998, it was awarded game of the year by many, and had stellar graphics. But now, after Medal of Honor, Half-Life, Battlefield 1942, and many more, we can feel its age startig to bring this game down. But still, after five years, it remains as one of the greatest RTS games to date.

In Starcraft, you are placed in the midst of a war between the Terran, Protoss, and Zerg, all batteling for supreme power. Each race has its own units with special abilities. For example, the Terran have a unit called a Ghost, which can become invisible and run right past the enemy units without them even noticing. In order to succeed in your missions, you must gather minerals. Without any, you will not be able to create your army. You see, Starcraft is the kind of game where whoever builds the largest army wins. But, in the Multiplayer mode, it's whoever has the largest army the fastest wins.

In Starcraft, there are numerous buildings you can create. There is a barracks, where the soldiers are created, a Command Center, where the units that collect minerals are created, a building that creates ships-either transporters or fighters, etc. (All of theses buildings are Terran-the Zerg have a Hatchery, where their units are created). There are about 30 levels in total, none of which fell the same. Each level is completely different from its predecessor. They are also very long-meaning they will take a while. Sometimes there are just so many enemy soldiers it feels impossible to complete the level. But, then again, nothing is impossible.

Starcraft has proven itself to be a very enjoyable RTS. The graphics suffer slightly, but, hey, it was made in '98-what do you expect? Beside the levels that feel nearly impossible, Starcraft is one of the finest RTS games to date.
