One of the best WWII FPS to date

Though it only can support 32 players maximum, and lacks vehicles, Day of Defeat (aka DoD) is sometimes even more addictive than Battlefild 1942, and presents stern competion for it. For one thing, the game rarely lags on a DSL connection, which is a totally different case for BF1942, but the maps are much smaller. But these small sized maps are a good thing, too. For example, each time you are killed by an enemy player, you have to respawn at a designated point on the map. With smaller maps, it takes less time to get into the action; in BF1942, at times the maps can be so large it can take quite a while to get to the action. And I mean quite a while. But DoD and BF1942 are two totally different games altogether (though they are both online WWII FPS). BF1942 is for one who like large scale battles with airplanes and tanks (expect some lag on the maps with over 40 people playing) over huge, mountanous maps; DoD is for one who like smaller, close-enough-for-hand-to-hand-combat battles.

DoD has 15 maps, and they each have their own special code-name (how cute). For example, D-Day is codenamed Charlie. Many of the levels take place in cities or small villages, and some take place in a forest (codenamed Forest- that's a no-brainer). But there is one in particular that stands out from the others to me. It is called Avalanche, and it has you running up through the heart of a revently-bombed city. It is a territory map- you must run up to one of the six flags, stand next to it for a few seconds, and then you control that flag. The one who controls all of the flags wins. There is only one road you are allowed to walk on-so it is really a battle in which you must push the opposing force back and capture all of the flags. It is a very enjoyable map, one that I could play for months (and I will).

The fact that DoD lacks vehiclesdoes not take any of the fun away from it.Yes, you might think it will become boring and repettative, only being allowed to play as infantrymen. But fear not my friends, DoD hooks you in from the start and will not let go. DoD hooked me more than BF1942 did. Not that BF1942 is a bad game, it's vica-versa. It's just that DoD appealed to me more than BF1942 did. So far, at least. DoD also has voice support, so if you have a microphone, you can commincate to your teamates. Fun!

DoD also has blood. That's right, I said blood. Unlike BF1942, which has none. The actions and movements in DoD are also more realistic than BF1942 (it must be the Half-Life engine). For example, in DoD, when someone aims a bazooka at you and fires, it lifts your soon-to-be-dead body straight into the air, all limbs flailing. It is a very enjoyable sight when you are the Rocket Launchee (as you can see I made that word up). When a rocket explodes inches from your face in BF1942, your body just either falls over, or, if you were in a prone position, simply turns belly-up.Now where's the fun in blowing people up here?

In DoD, each fighting force has its own selection of weapons. For the Americans, there are Tommy Guns, rifles (my favorite), Machine guns. The British have really the same types of weapins, but they just look different, along with the Nazis.

Online FPS just don't get much better than DoD. Besides the lack of vehicles, the older-looking graphics, that, on some levels where you are in a forest make the trees walls so you feel you are in an arena and lack of being able to be a medic (sigh), DoD packs a rather painful punch. And, to make things even better (though there counldn't possibly be anything to make this game better), it's free!

Pros: Small maps make it easy to navigate, awesome weapons, great maps, spectacular battles

Cons: Lack of vehicles, graphics are a little outdated

Overall: One of the best online FPS ever made, and it's free!
